Ferrocement Tanks

Health centre2011For our largest systems it is more economical to build the tank out of ferrocement which is a combination of heavy and light wire reinforcing combined with a cement plaster. Quite large tanks can be quickly constructed but this technique does require a higher level of skill than the concrete ring type described above. We are proud to say that our technicians - many of whom started out as rice farmers - are now experts at building this type of tank. The typical size for these tanks is between 14,000-35,000 litres allowing tens of thousands of people to benefit at schools and health centres across Cambodia.

The design of the tank and its associated fittings is very robust and this is of key importance for systems installed at institutions where security after dark is non existent. Unfortunately, vandalism and theft are all too common and represent the main reason for break downs

The design of the tank and its associated fittings is very robust and this is of key importance for systems installed at institutions where security after dark is non existent. Unfortunately, vandalism and theft are all too common and represent the main reason for break downs.

We mitigate this risk in several ways:

?The tank itself has thick walls with good quality reinforcing

?The lid of the tank is very heavy and is sealed in place with a thin layer of cement

?All pipe work is either elevated or buried

?All taps and valves are positioned inside a concrete box with a metal lid that is pad locked shut

?Where possible all components are sourced locally so that repairs, when necessary, can be carried out easily

?Our technicians employ local labourers, where possible, so that operation and maintenance know-how stays within the community.
